The first person Eddie meets in heaven is the Blue Man. As his name will say differently, he was not born blue.
When growing up, the blue man was always nervous. Being this nervous, he wet himself and the bed countless times. His father was always ashamed of him and disowned him. When the Blue Man was older, he wanted to calm his nerves. So he went to a chemist who gave his Silver nitrate to drink. Silver nitrate was later considered poison. When the silver nitrate failed to work, the Blue Man ingested more, causing his skin to turn to the color of ash. He was ashamed and agitated. He swallowed even more silver nitrate and this turned his skin from the color of ash to the color of blue.
When Eddie first speaks to the Blue Man, he asks him "How did you die?" The Blue Man replies and says that Eddie was the cause of his death. When Eddie was little he was playing catch with his friends. Eddie fails to catch the ball and it goes flying over his head and into the street. Eddie runs into the street and a Ford Model A skids and misses Eddie by an inch or so. Eddie shakes it off and runs back to his friends. The man behind the wheel of that Ford Model A was the Blue Man. After the Blue Man regains control of the car, his mind is still affected by how close he came to a tragedy. A jolt of adrenaline causes the Blue Man's heart to pump furiously. The Blue Man had a heart attack, and Eddie was the cause of that heart attack. The Blue Man died.
The Blue Man teaches Eddie to see things from others' points of view. He also teaches Eddie that strangers can affect your life, and their own life, dramatically.
