ChaThis journal will focus on all three connections made in chapter 17 of An Abundance of Katherines.
In chapter 17, Colin, Hassan, and Lindsey all go to a nursing home to interview an elderly woman, Mabel Bartrand. Lindsey had very close connections with Mabel but had not visited her in a long while. When Lindsey arrived, she was overcome with joy and sadness. Joy from finally visiting Mabel, and sadness because she had not visited her in so long that she started crying.
Text to Self: I can relate to Lindsey visiting Mabel because I recently visited my great-grandmother in Canada. Before she lived in a nursing home, she lived with my grandmother's sister, but her health was getting worse and worse, and she was not a very nice person to be around. As soon as she was put in a home, she got healthier than she was before. She became a much nicer person and began cracking jokes and making me and my family laugh a lot. I can connect to Lindsey because I had those same emotions when visiting my great-grandma, joy from finally seeing her after all these years, and sadness from not visiting her in a while.
Text to Text: Chapter 17 of An Abundance of Katherines can relate to The First Phone Call From Heaven written by Mitch Albom. I have read this other novel before. Many of the living characters in the book receive phone calls from their dead relatives: mothers, sisters, children. All of the living characters feel the same emotions as Lindsey, joy from hearing their dead relatives voice again when they never thought they would, and sadness from remembering that they are dead and having to grieve all over again
Text to World: Lindsey's feelings can be reciprocated all over the world. People all over the world are in the same situation as Lindsey when visiting Mabel in a home. They all feel sadness and joy when visiting their relatives.
